Sometimes when you win, you still lose:

I just finished re-reading one of my all time favorite books, Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends & Influence People. Every time I read it I am reminded how important relationships really are. There was a particular poem that stood out to me this time through.

Here lies the body of William Jay

Who died maintaining his right of way

He was right, dead right, as he speed along

But he’s just as dead as if he were wrong

What a great reminder that even when you are completely right and you can prove it, you can still lose. Showing the other person respect and consideration for their point of view often goes a long way in resolving conflict. I am reminded of a great quote by Horace Mann who was one of the most important and beneficial leaders of education reform in the 1800’s.

“Do not think of knocking out another person’s brains because he differs in opinion from you. It would be as rational to knock yourself on the head because you differ from yourself ten years ago.”
Horace Mann
